Just Say No
Many of us -- and you know who you are -- are just too darn nice. We say yes to things we don't really want (causing clutter) or yes to requests we don't want to accept (filling up the calendar). This month, you have permission to just say "No!"
Obviously, you can't say no to everything, or you run the risk of getting fired. But start to pay attention to what comes out of your mouth when someone offers you something or asks you to do something. Do you automatically say yes? If you do, begin to practice discernment in your responses. Do you really want or need this? Do you have the space for it, physically, or in your schedule? What's making you want to accept? Is it guilt or obligation, or truly something you want?
If you have a hard time saying no, try this stalling technique. When you are asked to do something optional, tell them, "I"m not sure, I need to check my calendar and see if I can make it work. Can I let you know in a few days?" Or even better, when appropriate, just lob the ball back into their court by asking them to get back to you by a certain date. They might just move on to asking the next person. Or if it truly is something you want to do, you'll be able to accept it responsibly, since you'll have taken the time to check it out in your schedule
